Edenton Steamers News Release
HAMPTON, V.A - The Edenton Steamers (36-10, 16-4) and the Peninsula Pilots (33-16, 19-5) game was suspended Thursday night in the bottom of the fifth of a 2-2 ball game at War Memorial Stadium.
In the race for the second-half East Division championship Edenton travelled up to Hampton, VA to take on the Peninsula Pilots in what will prove to be the deciding three games vs. the Pilots in the next five days.
Unfortunately Mother Nature had other plans on this night in Virginia. In the bottom of the fifth with Bradon Reitano on second base after hitting a one-out double to left field and Alex Close at the plate with a 1-0 count a bolt of lightning seemingly right on top of War Memorial Stadium came down forcing the umpire crew to clear and tarp the field in preparation for approaching rain.
After an hour and 13 minute delay where heavy rain fell on the field the game was officially suspended in the bottom of the fifth with Peninsula batting.
The game will be resumed tomorrow night in Edenton at Historic Hicks Field at the point where it was suspended. Peninsula will be the home team for the remainder of the suspended game and a seven inning contest will be played as the regular scheduled game following the conclusion of the suspended game.
First pitch will be at 6 p.m. with the gates to Hicks Field opening at 5 p.m. Edenton plays Peninsula one more time after tomorrow's suspended game double header, on August 5th in the final regular season game in 2013. After tomorrow night Edenton hits the road on their second overnight trip of the season, heading to Columbia and then Asheboro, the top two teams in the CPL's West Division.
Connor Cuff (University of Pennsylvania) made his eighth start of the season and fourth against the Pilots this summer. Danny Grauer toed the rubber for the Pilots.
Edenton cracked the score board right off the bat with a one out walk followed by a ground ruled double by Nick Miller (University of Northern Colorado). Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) singled to knock in his league-leading 40th RBI of the season for a 1-0 lead for the Clams. Adam Kirsch (Texas Tech University) followed with an RBI ground out that scored Miller for a 2-0 lead.
Peninsula answered with a run in the bottom of the first off Cuff, who was a little erratic out of the gate. He hit the Pilots lead-off man Patrick Grady, who was then sacrificed to second base. Grady stole third and came home on a wild pitch by Cuff to cut the lead in half.
Cuff danced out of trouble in the second and third innings, hanging on to the 2-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth. Bill Cullen led-off with a double and after a sacrifice bunt; Josh Silver brought him home with a ground out to second base to tie the game at 2-2.
Edenton, through five innings at the plate has hit into three rally killing double plays and defensively Peninsula has stolen four bases and been thrown out twice in six attempts.
