Morehead City Marlins News Release
Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins broke a nine-game losing skid on Friday night in Morehead City by sweeping a twin-bill with the Fayetteville SwampDogs at Big Rock Stadium. The Marlins defeated Fayetteville 2-1 in a close first game and came from behind to win game two by a score of 8-4 thanks to a four-run seventh inning.
Despite losing the ballgame the SwampDogs picked up its only run of the night on a wild pitch back in the fourth inning of game one to take a 1-0 lead. However, the Marlins responded by tying the ballgame on a wild pitch of their own and then took the lead when Dylan Brown laid down a beautiful bunt down the third base line and Andrew LaMura scored easily from third base. The Marlins hung on for the victory as Tyler Petsch earned his first save of the season with a scoreless 2/3 of an inning. Ben Fuchs finished the season on a high note with his fourth victory of the season as he tossed 6 2/3 innings not allowing an earned run and striking out five.
The Marlins ended up in a similar position in game two as they trailed by two runs heading into the home half of the sixth. However, Morehead City scored two in the fifth to tie the ballgame thanks to RBI's from Hayden Jones and then four in the sixth, highlighted by a three-RBI triple off the bat of Ryan Cranmer. Brown ended up being the difference maker as he roped a single right back up the middle to make it a 5-4 ballgame.
Cole Billingsley earned the win for the Marlins in relief of Morehead City starter Justin Taylor. Randy Hair suffered the loss for the SwampDogs falling to 1-2 on the season.
The Marlins are in Wilmington on Saturday, off on Sunday and then conclude the 2013 season with a home contest against the Wilmington Sharks on Monday August 5. First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM.
