
Steamers Offense Pounds out 15 Hits in Win

EDENTON, NC - The Steamers banged out a season high 15 hits and Matt Adams pitched five scoreless innings, earning his second win of the season as Edenton defeated the Wilson Tobs 7-1 at Historic Fleming Stadium on Wednesday.
Left-handed pitcher Matt Adams (Southern Polytechnic State University) made his second start and third appearance overall for Edenton. Right-handed pitcher Clay Smith toed the rubber for the Tobs in his fourth start of the season
Edenton picked up one hit through the first two innings against Smith and the Tobs, while Adams gave up no hits in his first two innings of work but did walk two batters.
The Steamers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Michael Massi (Mercer University) reached base on an infield single. A foul out and a fly out later Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) lined an RBI single to make the score 1-0 Steamers.
Wilson loaded the bases in the bottom of the third against Adams with nobody out. Adams responded by striking out Andrew Istler, getting Joe Costigan to foul out and then striking out Zach Houchins to end the threat and strand the bases loaded.
In the top of the fourth Edenton broke the game open against Smith. Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) extended his hitting streak to eight games with a leadoff single. Camporeale stole his way to second and moved to third when Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) reached on a throwing error by the third baseman Joey Hawkins. After a strikeout by Wes Meadows (Otterbein University), Blaise Fernandez (George Mason University) knocked in Camporeale with a double, picking up RBI number nine on the season and putting Edenton ahead 2-0. Massi walked and DJ Johnson (Mercer University) brought home Branigan on an infield RBI single and it was 3-0 Steamers. On Johnson's single there was a throwing error by the shortstop that allowed Fernandez to score and Johnson wound up at second base. Edenton now led 4-0. A wild pitch charged to Smith allowed Massi to score and Jason Kanzler (University of Buffalo) knocked in Johnson with a single to complete the five run inning The Steamer lead was 6-0.
Adams pitched five innings, holding the Tobs scoreless, allowing just three hits; he walked five and struck out five. He departed in line for his second win of the season with the Steamers up 6-0.
Edenton was held scoreless by Tobs pitcher Kevin Berry and Tyler Bolton for three innings. Bolton came back out for the eighth inning and Edenton tacked on a run. Massi singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Kanzler singled behind Massi and an error on the single allowed Massi to score, giving Edenton a 7-0 lead.
Right-handed pitcher Kevin Bibler (Southern Polytechnic State University) made his first appearance for the Steamers retiring the first seven Tobs he faced. He fired back-to-back one, two, three innings before running into some trouble in the bottom of the eighth. Three straight singles by Houchins, Bill Gertenslager, and then the RBI single by Jackson Slade put Wilson on the board but they still trailed 7-1. Bibler, in total, pitched three innings, allowing one run on three hits and he struck out two.
Righty Matt Duncan (Morehead State University) came on to close out the win for Edenton. Duncan allowed two singles but closed the door on the 14th win of the season for the Steamers. Jason Kanzler notched three hits, two stolen bases and an RBI in his best game as a Steamer this season.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats.
