Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - Alex Kelly hit a bases loaded, one-out single to right center field in the bottom of the tenth to score Michael Camporeale and give the Steamers their 10th win of the season in a dramatic 6-5 walk-off win on Wednesday over the Wilson Tobs at Historic Hicks Field.
ÃÂ
Left-handed pitcher Eddie Perkins (Tusculum College) made the start for the Steamers against right-handed pitcher Clay Smith for the Tobs.
ÃÂ
Perkins issued back-to-back walks to begin the first inning. Joe Costigan laid down a sacrifice bunt and Geoff Jimenez came home to score on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 Wilson after just half an inning.
ÃÂ
Edenton tied the game three batters into the bottom of the first when Nathan Burns (Florida International) reached on an error with one out. Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) drove in Burns with an RBI double to tie the score at 1-1.
ÃÂ
Perkins allowed one base runner each in the top of the second and the top of the third, holding Wilson scoreless through both frames.
ÃÂ
Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) hitÃÂ a solo home run, his first of the season, in the bottom of the second to give Edenton a 2-1 lead and Camporeale followed with his first home run of the season in the bottom of the third to push Edenton's lead to 3-1.
ÃÂ
Perkins, with one out, issued a walk and then allowed a single to Ben Fish. After a ground out, Zack Lee hit an infield RBI single to score Aaron Rea, who walked and the score was 3-2 Edenton. David Teasley (Mercer University) came into the game for Perkins and on a double steal; Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) threw to second. Second baseman DJ Johnson (Mercer University) and shortstop Michael Massi (Mercer University) collided and coming home to score from third was Fish to tie the game 3-3.
ÃÂ
Perkins pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits, four walks and he struck out three. Teasely remained in the game in the top of the fourth. A leadoff walk to Costigan proved costly when he moved to second on a Phillip Williams ground out and then to third on a Zach Houchins fly out. Costigan came home to score on Rea's two-out RBI single to give Wilson a 4-3 lead.
ÃÂ
In the bottom of the fifth against Smith the Steamers once again reclaimed the lead. Johnson reached on a leadoff single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the left fielder Jimenez. A Jason Kanzler (University of Buffalo) ground out moved Johnson to third and Burns brought him home with an RBI ground out to tie the game at 4-4. Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania) then scored Camporeale from second base after he walked and stole second to give Edenton a 5-4 lead.
ÃÂ
Teasley came out for his third inning of relief and Andrew Istler greeted him with an infield single. Istler then stole his way to third base and scored on Harry Slade's RBI infield single to tie the game 5-5.
ÃÂ
The game remained 5-5 until the bottom of the tenth inning. Aaron Labrie, who entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh retired all eight batters he faced for Wilson and was lifted with one in the bottom of the tenth. Zach Merciez came into the game and Camporeale hit a one-out double. Branigan was then intentionally walked and Ray Ortega (Manhattan College) worked a walk to load the bases. The stage was set for Alex Kelly, who did not disappoint. He lined a pitch into the right center field gap and Camporeale trotted home with the 6-5 Steamer win.
ÃÂ
Justin D'Amato (Saint John Fisher College), Travis Huber (University of Nebraska) and Jordan Egan (Norfolk State University) combined for four shutout innings of relief to give Kelly the chance to win it. Egan earned the win for his perfect top of the tenth, improving to 1-0, while Merciez took the loss, falling to 0-1. Camporeale had three hits, including a home run and drove in his first two runs of the season.
