HAMPTON, Va. - The Morehead City Marlins (4-11) used a three-run fifth inning and strong pitching to snap a four-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Peninsula Pilots (6-7-1) Wednesday evening at War Memorial Stadium.

Matt Ogden (1-0) picked up the win, allowing two runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings pitched. The combination of Ryan Oglesby, Evan Zerff and William Prince, all right-handers, shut down the Pilots over the last 3 1/3 innings.

The Marlins got on the board early as they plated a run in the top of the first inning. Geoff DeGroot led off the game with a single, stole second base and came around to score on an RBI-single from Sam Ott to left field to make the score 1-0.

However, the Pilots jumped right back in the second inning when they recorded three hits and a walk in the frame. Geno Escalante led off with a single and advanced to second and third base on a walk and a hit, respectively. The Pilots tied the game at 1-1 when Josh Eldridge ripped a single to right field, scoring Escalante from third.

The Marlins took the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning when Corey Bass drove home Robbie Rea who had reached on an error. Then, the Marlins tacked on three runs in the sixth inning when Bass again laced an RBI-single, scoring Ott from third base. The next batter, Chad Shannon, scored Rea and Bass with a single up the middle, making the score 5-1 in favor of the Marlins.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ogden gave up one run and loaded the bases full of Pilots before giving way to Oglesby. The right-hander struck out Dan Grauer swinging to end the threat, preserving the three-run Marlins lead at 5-2.
