
Stauffer Throws Gem, Shuts Out Sky Sox

PORTLAND, Ore. - Tim Stauffer took a perfect game into the sixth inning and combined with Scott Patterson to throw a two-hit shutout as the Portland Beavers defeated the Colorado Sky Sox 5-0 Monday Night at PGE Park.
Stauffer (2-1) retired the first 17 batters he faced before giving up a two-out single to Brandon Hynick. The right-hander yielded just two hits and a walk over eight innings to earn his second consecutive home victory.
Patterson threw a perfect ninth-inning, striking out two to secure the shutout.
Mike Baxter finished with two hits and a pair of runs scored, Val Pascucci went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Sean Kazmar added a homer as the Beavers (40-45) won their second consecutive game.
Portland took the early 1-0 advantage in the first inning after Peter Ciofrone plated Baxter, who doubled to begin the frame, on a sacrifice fly.
Brett Dowdy, Pascucci and Drew Macias added three runs for the Beavers in the third. Dowdy hit an RBI groundout following consecutive leadoff singles by Stauffer and Baxter, Pascucci continued with a run-scoring single and Macias tacked on an RBI double.
Kazmar belted a solo home run onto 18th street in the sixth, pushing the Beavers lead to, 5-0.
Sky Sox (49-35) starter Hynick (7-6), who threw a seven-inning perfect game in his last outing against the Beavers on June 30, took the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.
The Beavers conclude their four-game series against Colorado Springs Tuesday, 1:05 p.m. (Pacific), at PGE Park.
NOTES: RHP Mike Ekstrom was recalled by San Diego and Cha Seung Baek was transferred to Portland on a major league rehab assignment ... the Beavers also released Vincent Sinisi and placed outfielder Danny Putnam on the active roster ... for the second consecutive game, the Beavers held the Sky Sox to two hits.
