Staten Island Takes First Game Of Day-Night Doubleheader Saturday

STATEN ISLAND, NY --- Staten Island got an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game and then scored the game-ending run on a two-out passed ball in the bottom of the eighth as the Yankees rallied from a 4-0 deficit for a 5-4 New York-Penn League victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters on Saturday afternoon in the first game of a day-night doubleheader at Richmond County Ballpark.

Vermont had built a 4-0 lead by scoring two runs in both the second and fourth innings. The Lake Monsters got RBI singles from Yhonson Lopez and Dani Arias in the second inning for a 2-0 lead, then scored the two runs in the fourth when Arias got his second RBI single of the game to score Tyler Moore and got an unearned run when Yeurys Tejeda was able to score first on Arias' single on a fielding error by center fielder Ray Kruml.

The Yankees got a run back in the fourth on a leadoff walk, wild pitch and Michael Lyon RBI single off Vermont starter Will Atwood. The run was the first given up by Atwood since July 21st at Oneonta and snapped a 19-inning scoreless streak for the Lake Monster left-hander.

With Atwood's pitch count nearing its end in the fifth, he gave up a one-out double on an 0-2 pitch and hit the next batter on an 0-2 pitch to end his afternoon. Carlos Peralta came on in relief and gave up an RBI double to Addison Maruszak and a sacrifice fly ro David Adams to cut the Vermont lead to 4-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, Maruszak got a one-out single off reliever Steven Stewart and moved around to third on a two-base error by third baseman Tejeda on a Adams groundball. After a intentional walk to load the bases, Stewart struckout Dan Brewer for the second out before forcing home the tying run on a bases loaded walk to Lyon on a 3-2 pitch.

Staten Island won the game in the seventh against David Slovak (1-2) as Jack Rye led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a groundout before Slovak's 1-0 pitch to Maruszak tipped off the glove of catcher Derek Norris for a passed ball allowing Rye to score with the game-ending run.

Arias was 2-for-3 with two RBI for Vermont (23-32), while Nick Arata and Norris both had two hits. Lyon, Maruszak and Jahdiel Santamaria all had two hits for McNamara Division-leading Staten Island (36-21), while Mike Obradovich (1-0) struckout four in two scoreless innings for the win.

The two teams will return to Richmond Country Ballpark tonight for the second half of the day-night twinbill beginning at 7:05 pm with another scheduled seven-inning game. The series will conclude on Sunday with a single nine-inning game starting at 2:00 pm.
