State College Spikes News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The State College Spikes came within one run of the Williamsport Crosscutters with a late-game rally, but fell just short in the 6-5 loss at Bowman Field Saturday night.
After falling behind 6-0 by the fourth inning, State College (11-44) clawed their way back within one run of the Crosscutters (28-28) but after scoring a run in the ninth, David Rubinstein struck out with runners on second and third.
Spikes' starter Rudy Owens (1-6) lasted three innings on the mound for the Spikes, allowing three runs on six hits. The lefty struck out three in the outing before being replaced by Jorge Charry. Charry allowed the Crosscutters to score three runs in the fourth inning before settling down to pitch two more scoreless innings.
The Spikes began their comeback efforts in the fifth inning when Rubinstein blasted his first professional home run to left field, scoring the first Spikes' run of the night. State College plated another run in the sixth with Chase d'Arnaud scoring on a Jeremy Farrell double.
The seventh inning saw two more Spikes cross the plate as Chad Rice and Matt Payne both scored. The inning was made up of two Spikes' hits, two walks and a run-scoring passed ball.
The Spikes scored another run and had two runners in scoring position in the top of the ninth with two outs, but alas their efforts came up just short as the runners were stranded on a game-ending strike out.
Owens was handed the loss for the Spikes, with Robert Diekman (1-3) walking away with the win for Williamsport.
The Spikes return home tomorrow for the final game of the 2008 SawBuck series at 6:05 p.m. against the Williamsport Crosscutters. The gates at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park will open early at 4:30 for Team Autograph Day. The 2008 State College Spikes will be available to sign autographs on the field from 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Tickets are still available by calling 877-99-SPIKES, at the Box Office at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park or online at www.statecollegespikes.com.
