Staten Island Yankees News Release
STATEN ISLAND - The Staten Island Yankees defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats 7-2 to take the opener of a three-game set at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Friday night.
Tri-City opened the scoring in the second, but the Yankees would put together two three-run innings in the second and the fourth to pull away early on. All of the runs were scored with two outs in both innings.
In the second, the Yankees got RBI hits from Ricardo Ferreira, Alex Junior and Eduardo Torrealba. The big hit came from Junior who tripled home a run.
Staten Island was far from done as they added three in the fourth inning. The big blow came off the bat of Andres Chaparro who hit his fourth home run of the season to drive in two after a throwing error brought home the first run.
The Yankees would add another run in the eighth on an RBI ground out by Ferreira.
Staten Island got a great start from Harold Cortijo who threw five strong innings. The Yankees would only need to use one relief pitcher as Frank German came in and struck out five batters over four innings to close the game out and get his first save with the Yankees.
The Yankees host the ValleyCats tomorrow for game two of the series on Staten Island. Once again, the Yankees will become the Pizza Rats as they look to win the second game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 7p.m.
