Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - The Hudson Valley Renegades scored eight unearned runs in an eight-run seventh inning as they defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 9-0 Saturday night at Dutchess Stadium. The eight runs tied for the most in a single inning this season by the Renegades, and it all started with two out and nobody on base.
The rally started with a single to center from first baseman Jacson McGowan. After a walk put runners at first and second, designated hitter David Parrett hit a soft grounder back to relief pitcher Chris Kohler. The right-hander tried to underhand the ball to first to end the inning, however the throw went into the dirt and wasn't handled by Vermont first baseman Alfonso Rivas. An error was given to Kohler, and the wheels completely came off for the Lake Monsters.
With the bases loaded and two out, Hudson Valley second baseman Garrett Giovannelli lined a double to right-center to score two runs and give the Renegades the lead. Rightfielder Bryce Brown drew a walk to reload the bases before shortstop Ford Proctor reached on a fielding error from Vermont second baseman Marcos Brito. A bases-loaded walk to leftfielder Justin Bridgman would follow and Hudson Valley owned a 4-0 lead. Third baseman Tyler Frank would with a ground a ball, which again was booted by Brito to score another run and up the Hudson Valley lead to five.
With the bases loaded and still two out, catcher Chris Betts lofted a routine fly ball to leftfield that Vermont's Payton Squier lost in the lights. The ball fell in for a cheap three-run double and gave the Renegades a commanding 8-0 lead.
All told, eight runs scored in the inning and none were earned. There were three errors by the Lake Monsters in the inning, three walks, and only three hits by the Renegades.
Hudson Valley added one more run in the eighth on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Vermont reliever Charlie Cerny, which scored centerfielder Jake Stone from third. It was the only earned run of the game by Hudson Valley.
Getting the win for the Renegades was reliever Tanner Dodson (1-0) who notched his first professional win by going three hitless innings and striking out two. The loss went to Kohler (1-2) who allowed seven unearned runs on two hits with three walks in 0.2 innings of work.
The starters were great for each team as Blake Pflughaupt tossed five shutout innings and struck out a season-high seven batters on three hits for Hudson Valley. Vermont's Jhenderson Hurtado went six scoreless frames and struck out six on four hits.
The Renegades finished with 10 hits in the game; six combined in the seventh and eighth innings. Betts went 2-4 with a double and three RBI, Giovannelli went 2-3 with the go-ahead double and two RBI, Brown finished with two singles and a run scored, and Stone went 2-3 with two runs.
Vermont had four hits for the contest. Two were by Rivas who singled twice and stole a base.
The Renegades will take on the Vermont Lake Monsters tomorrow in the finale of their three-game series at Dutchess Stadium with a 5:05 start. Rightt-hander Miller Hogan (1-0, 6.30 ERA) will toe the bump for Hudson Valley against fellow righty Gus Varland (0-1, 2.00 ERA).
