State College Spikes News Release
-SPIKES FACE SCRAPPERS TONIGHT: The State College Spikes and Mahoning Valley Scrappers meet tonight for the second game of a three-game set at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Mahoning Valley has three of the four matchups between the two teams to extend its all-time series lead to 19-15. All four Spikes-Scrappers tilts in 2009 have been decided by one run.
-LAST NIGHT: Brock Holt put the Spikes in the homer column with a first-inning blast to right field, but the Scrappers pulled out a 5-4 win at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Holt's homer led off the bottom of the first for the Spikes, and keyed a three-run inning for State College. However, the Scrappers took the lead in the sixth inning, and after the Spikes tied in the bottom of the sixth, Mahoning Valley's Chun Chen delivered the eventual game-winning RBI single in the seventh. Pat Irvine went 2-for-2 and drove in a run for the Spikes.
-SPIKES GO WITH COX ON THE HILL: Left-hander Tyler Cox makes his third start of the season for State College. After allowing ten runs on ten hits on Opening Night, Cox recovered to pitch five strong innings and earn the win against Mahoning Valley this past Wednesday. The 35th-round pick of the Pirates in 2008, Cox struck out five while allowing only one run in his victorious outing five nights ago.
-SCRAPPERS FIGHT LEFTY WITH LEFTY: Mahoning Valley will send another southpaw, Ryan Anthony, to the mound tonight for a rematch of last Wednesday's pitching opponents. Anthony took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits over three innings. The Emporia State alum also walked two and struck out two five nights ago, and makes his second start of the year tonight.
-GOING TO THE DOGS: Tonight is Dollar Dog Night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, presented by the flagship radio home of the Spikes, 95.3-3WZ. Fans can purchase hot dogs for just $1 apiece all night long. It's also Bob's Bark in the Park Night presented by Metzger Animal Hospital, allowing fans to bring their dogs out to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
