-SPIKES TRY TO GET BACK ON WINNING TRACK: After taking their first home loss of the year on Monday, the State College Spikes look to go back to their winning ways in the final game of a three-game set against the Batavia Muckdogs at Medlar FIeld at Lubrano Park The Spikes took two out of three games from the Muckdogs at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia to start a road trip last week. Batavia holds the all-time series lead, 34-30, and a 17-16 lead in games played in State College.
-LAST GAME: The State College Spikes welcomed a record 507 dogs and the second-largest human walk-up crowd in ballpark history to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for Bark in the Park Night on Monday as the Spikes dropped a 5-3 decision to the Batavia Muckdogs. The walk-up crowd was second only to the Spikes' home finale of 2010 for the biggest in the seven-year history of the park. Clay Holmes took his first loss as a professional after yielding four runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out three over 3 2/3 innings.
-CREASY GOES TO THE MOUND FOR SPIKES TONIGHT: Right-hander Jason Creasy, the Pirates' eighth-round draft choice last year out of Clayton (NC) High School, makes his team-leading fourth start of the year for the Spikes tonight. Creasy is facing the Muckdogs for the first time after two starts against Mahoning Valley over the past ten days. The righty led Clayton to a conference title and earned conference pitcher-of-the-year honors in 2011 prior to being drafted.
-MUCKDOGS ENTRUST HILL TO O'SHEA: Left-hander Ben O'Shea is slated to start for Batavia tonight. O'Shea, the 35th-round choice of the Cardinals in the 2012 MLB Draft, went two scoreless innings in relief last time out against Jamestown. The University of Tampa product has allowed three runs in six total innings this year, allowing right-handed hitters a .214 average. O'Shea was also selected by the White Sox in the 10th round of the 2011 MLB Draft.
-SPIKES MOUND STAFFERS START STRONG: Holmes, Luis Heredia, Jake Burnette and Joely Rodriguez each have at least one start of five innings or more with two earned runs or less this year. Holmes (1.98) and Heredia (0.64) hold the top two earned run averages in the entire Pirates system this year, with Rodriguez eighth at 3.21.
-SPIKE MARKS: Barrett Barnes is tied for the NYPL lead in times hit by pitch with 5, and is tied for 3rd in steals with 5...State College as a team is now 22-for-26 in steal attempts this year...The Spikes have no homers yet as a team this year...All other NYPL teams have at least three...Jordan Cooper is one of just five NYPL relievers with at least 6 IP not to have walked a batter this year
