July 3, 2012 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
Josh Warner pitched seven innings of scoreless ball, but his performance was wasted as Steven Inch gave up the lead in a 3-1 Mahoning Valley win and series sweep.
The loss was Williamsport's fourth in a row as Diego Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Brian Pointer went 2-for-3.
Williamsport scored in the third inning to take the lead. After a lead-off infield single by Roman Quinn was misplayed on the infield, he found himself at third. A Gonzalez infield single later, it was 1-0 Crosscutters.
Josh Warner was excellent. The league's innings leader dropped his ERA to 1.08 after pitching seven scoreless innings, striking out a season-high seven and allowing just three hits.
But the Cutters' bats were quiet on the wrong night.
Steven Inch entered in the eighth inning. He gave up two consecutive one-out hits to Hunter Jones and Robel Garcia. After striking out Mark Bradley, Inch got ahead 0-2 on Tyler Naquin. But the two-strike fastball was up in the zone and Naquin took it out to deep center, beyond the glove of Brian Pointer for a two-run triple to give the Scrappers a 2-1 lead.
Williamsport gave up one more in the ninth, as Juan Romero hit his league-leading fifth homer to left field. Inch threw the next pitch behind Jeremy Lucas and got ejected. Jeb Stefan came on and walked two batters, but eventually got out of the inning.
But the offense could not respond.
The Crosscutters fall two games below .500 and into fifth place in the division. They hit the road to Brooklyn to take on the Cyclones on Wednesday. First pitch is at 6:00. Every Cutters game can be heard on ESPN Radio 104.1 FM, ESPN 1050 AM, or online at crosscutters.com
