-SPIKES HIT THE ROAD FOR MINI-SERIES IN MAHONING VALLEY: The State College Spikes face the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in game one of a two-game series at Eastwood Field tonight. State College goes back into Pinckney Division play tonight after 12 straight out-of-division contests in which they went 6-6. Mahoning Valley holds the all-time series lead, 36-30, and an 22-11 edge in games at Eastwood Field.

-LAST GAME: Tyler Gaffney hit his first pro double and Alex Fuselier had two hits and two RBI, but it wasn't quite enough as the State College Spikes were defeated by the Brooklyn Cyclones last night, 7-4. Fuselier's two-run single in the fourth gave the Spikes a 4-2 lead, but a four-run Cyclones fifth was the key turning point of the game. D.J. Crumlich also had a double for State College, while Tom Harlan took the loss on the mound. David Valesente added an RBI single after coming into the game as an emergency catcher when Ryan Hornback left due to injury.

-RODRIGUEZ RETURNS TO HILL FOR SPIKES: Left-hander Joely Rodriguez gets the start for State College on the mound this evening, coming off of back-to-back victories. The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native faced the minimum number of batters over five innings to get the win on Thursday at Tri-City, then allowed just two runs, one earned, over five innings to cop his second straight victory on Wednesday at home against Staten Island.

-MERRITT MAKES MOUND START FOR SCRAPPERS: Left-hander Ryan Merritt is slated to start for Mahoning Valley tonight. Merritt, the 16th-round draft pick of the Indians in 2011 out of McLennan (TX) Community College, took the loss last time out when he gave up five runs, three earned, on six hits over 4 2/3 innings. The McKinney, TX native has also pitched six shutout innings for a win against Williamsport this season on July 1. Merritt is 1-1 with a 5.68 home ERA this year.

-SPIKES MOUND STAFFERS START STRONG: Jason Creasy, Clay Holmes, Luis Heredia, Jake Burnette and Joely Rodriguez each have at least one start of five innings or more with one earned run or less this year. Holmes, Heredia and Rodriguez hold the top three earned run averages in the Pittsburgh Pirates' system, and the team's 3.08 ERA is tops in the organization.

-SPIKE MARKS: Heredia's ERA of 1.13 is now third-best in the NYPL, while Holmes is fourth at 1.14...Holmes's .146 opponents' batting average is 2nd in the league behind only Brooklyn's Luis Mateo...Jordan Cooper has allowed 6.1 baserunners/9 IP to lead NYPL relievers...Barrett Barnes is tied for the NYPL lead in times hit by pitch with 6
