Caronia Crushes Yankees

STATEN ISLAND, NY - The IronBirds picked up where they left off on Monday night in Aberdeen as the Birds plated 10 runs on 11 hits on Tuesday night and defeated the Staten Island Yankees, 10-4. SS Anthony Caronia went 4-for-4 on the night with a triple, home run, and five RBI while CF Anthony Vega capped off a six-run sixth inning with a three-run homer to right field.

Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the third inning, C Sam Kimmel led off the inning with a single into left field. With Anthony Caronia at the plate, Kimmel stole second base. That did not matter as Caronia tripled to left-center field. Kimmel easily scored on the play to tie the game at one.

LHP Cameron Coffey committed a pair of errors in the bottom of the third inning as the Yankees plated three unearned runs in the frame.

Down by three, the Birds lineup went to work in the top of fourth. 1B Christian Walker led off the inning with an infield single. Following a pair of walks loaded the bases, Staten Island starter, RHP Corey Black, exited and RHP Derek Varnadore entered from the bullpen. RF Lucas Herbst cut the deficit to two with a sac fly to right field. After Sam Kimmel walked, Anthony Caronia came through once again. This time with a two-run single. Caronia's single tied the game at four. Patchogue, NY native, CF Anthony Vega was next up. Vega capped off the big inning with a three-run blast to right field. Vega's third home run of the season put the IronBirds in front, 7-4.

2B Tom Winegardner doubled in a run in the seventh and Anthony Caronia put exclamation point on the offensive onslaught by the Birds in the top of the eighth. With Sam Kimmel on second, Caronia hit a two-run shot to right field. Caronia's first professional home run gave Aberdeen a 10-4 lead.

On the hill, LHP Cameron Coffey (1-4) notched his first win of the season. He allowed four runs, one earned, on five hits over five innings of work. RHP Sander Beck closed out the night with four shutout frames. Beck notched the first save of his professional career.

Derek Varnadore (1-2) picked up the loss out of the Yankees bullpen.

The IronBirds and Yankees will close out the two-game series on Wednesday morning in Staten Island. RHP Sebastian Vader (0-2, 7.31) will take the hill for Aberdeen while the Baby Bombers will turn to LHP Tim Flight (0-2, 6.60). First pitch from Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George is set for 11 a.m. Coverage on the IronBirds Radio Network will begin at 10:45 a.m.
