LINCOLN, Neb. - The Lincoln Stars (0-2) fell 4-1 on Sunday afternoon against the Omaha Lancers (1-0) at the Ice Box.
Alex Gaffney drew first blood with a power-play goal twelve minutes into the opening frame to give Omaha the lead. Joey Larson knotted up the game at one for Lincoln with a strike on the man-advantage at 17:57. Aidan Thompson and Will Margel picked up the assists, marking points in back-to-back games.
In the second period, the pace slowed down and both teams were struggling for even-strength opportunities. Moments after Winter Wallace was stopped on an odd-man rush by Jakub Dobes, Tyler Carpenter capitalized on the counter-attack for Omaha, beating Henrik Laursen past the glove side at 6:05 of the second period.
Omaha carried a 2-1 lead into the third period, where it was Carpenter lighting the lamp again, this time on the power-play at 7:29. Nolan Renwick added an empty-net goal with under two and a half minutes to go. Laursen made 13 saves on 16 shots while Dobes and Cooper Black made a combined 20 saves in the win.
In terms of special teams, Lincoln went 1-for-7 with the man-advantage and 5-for-7 on the penalty kill. Through two preseason games, the Stars have yet to score an even-strength goal. All three of their Corn Cup goals have come on the power play.
