Stars drop regular season finale

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars and the Houston Aeros concluded their respective Regular Season schedules and closed the book on the American Hockey League's 70th Anniversary Regular Season on Sunday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena. Iowa was unable to push their home winning streak to seven, ultimately falling to Houston, 5-3.

Defenseman Brian Fahey dented the scoresheet first, giving the Iowa Stars a 1-0 lead just 2:53 into the opening period. Fahey's goal came when his shot deflected off of Shawn Belle's skate. Belle began the season with Iowa before being dealt at the trade deadline by Dallas to Minnesota. Kirby Law recorded his League-leading 109th point when he scored his 43rd goal of the season just under two minutes later. Peter Olvecky gave the Aeros a 2-1 lead at the 10:05 mark of the first period.

The second period began with Joey Tetarenko scoring his first goal of the season at the 3:59 mark. Junior Lessard made the score 3-2 with his 28th goal of the season. Dan Jancevski and Kyle Brodziak picked-up the assists. For Jancevski, it was his career-best 38th point of the year: (9/29/38). Five minutes later, Erik Westrum gave Houston the two-goal lead back. Rookie D'Arcy McConvey again pulled the Stars to within one, when he notched his first career AHL goal. McConvey's goal came with :03 seconds remaining in the second.

Matt Foy scored the lone goal of the third period to seal the victory of Houston.

Goaltender Dan Ellis faced 38 shots in the loss.

Iowa begins their quest for the 2006 Calder Cup on Friday night in Milwaukee. Game time is 7:00 PM.

CALDER CUP PLAYOFFS: The best-of-seven series will see the first two games (Fri & Sat) played on the road, before returning to Wells Fargo Arena for games on Monday, April 24th, and Tuesday, April 25th. If necessary, Game Five will be held on Thursday, April 27th at Wells Fargo Arena. All of the home dates will have 7:05 PM face-offs. Games Six and Seven, also if necessary, will be on the road, however, due to NBA scheduling, game dates and time have not yet been finalized. Doors open for all home games one hour prior to face-off.
