Stars Announce JP Chunga as Play-By-Play Announcer
November 6, 2024 - NBA G League (G League)
Salt Lake City Stars News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - The Salt Lake City Stars, the official NBA G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, announced the hiring of JP Chunga as the team's new play-by-play announcer ahead of the 2024-25 G League season.
Chunga will utilize his five years within the Utah Jazz organization to tell the stories of future and developing NBA talent for all Stars home games.
"JP has contributed immensely to telling the story of the Utah Jazz during his time here, and we are thrilled to now welcome him into the Stars family as well," said Jonathan Rinehart, SLC Stars President. "His passion for the game and the organization, combined with both his broadcast and extensive podcasting experience, make him a perfect fit to represent our team. We are confident that Jazz and Stars fans will enjoy tuning in as he dives deeper into the stories of this developing team and staff."
Chunga will continue his popular podcast, Roundball Roundup, providing listeners extensive coverage of all things Jazz; from the early days of 'Pistol' Pete Maravich to present time with Lauri Markkanen and Jordan Clarkson. Some of his past notable guests include the likes of Gordon Hayward, Adam Sandler, Danny Ainge, Adrian Wojnarowski, Ian Eagle, and the Stars' very own head coach, Steve Wojciechowski.
Prior to joining the Jazz digital team in 2019, Chunga served as Executive Producer at ESPN700, covering the Jazz, Real Salt Lake, and the University of Utah.
A Salt Lake City native, Chunga graduated from West High School before attending Syracuse University, where he served as the play-by-play announcer for the Orange men's soccer and women's lacrosse teams (2013-16). During his senior year, he covered the 2016 Orange men's basketball trip to the Final Four in Houston, for the campus TV station, Citrus TV. Chunga gained additional play-by-play experience during his collegiate career as the broadcaster for the Syracuse Silver Knights, a professional indoor men's soccer team located in Syracuse, N.Y.
"I'm excited to be a part of the development stories of so many players and people within the Stars," said Chunga on his new role. "I am thrilled to strengthen my commitment to this first-class Jazz organization by providing the soundtrack to the Stars."
Beyond the basketball court and podcast studio, Chunga also serves as the play-by-play announcer for the Utah Royals of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), located in Sandy, Utah.
Chunga assumes the Stars role previously held by Tony Parks, who became the "Voice of the Salt Lake Bees," Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, this past season.
"We are very grateful for Tony's contributions and dedication during his years with the Stars and wish him nothing but the best moving forward," said Rinehart.
