Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Sioux City, IA-The Stampede fought back all night from two and three-goal deficits, but came up on the wrong end of a 5-3 final Saturday night at the Tyson Events Center against the Sioux City Musketeers. Trailing 3-0 in the second, the Herd pulled within a goal only to fall behind 4-2. Sioux Falls would once again pull within a goal in the third, but the Musketeers would eventually take the game 5-3.

Ryan Brushett, Parker Tuomie and Chaz Switzer all scored for the Herd while Ales Stezka took the loss in between the pipes, stopping 34 of 39 shots. The loss dropped the Herd to 1-1-0 on the season while Sioux City improved to 2-1-0.

The Musketeers gave the Stampede a taste of their own medicine with a lot of energy and strong play in the first. They wasted little time getting things going, scoring 3:12 into the game when Josh Wilkens sent a pass to the hash marks on the right circle where Teemu Pulkkinen wristed one past Stampede goaltender Ales Stezka. Seven minutes later the Musketeers added to their lead when Jake Durflinger took the puck inside the left circle and backhanded a shot that found its way through the pads of Stezka to make it a 2-0 game. The Musketeers nearly added to their lead, but Stezka and the Stampede defense held off an impressive first period charge by Sioux City who took a 2-0 lead in the locker room, outshooting the Herd 16-8.

Sioux City took a three goal advantage just 1:48 into the second period when Teemu Pulkkinen took a pass in the right circle from Christian Melke and wristed a shot through the pads of Stezka. The Stamepde got on the board at 3:05 Ryan Brushett tapped in a loose puck. Jack Doremus sent the puck through the crease and Brushett came in from behind the net and tapped the puck into the back of the net. The Herd pulled within a goal just 44 seconds later on a Top Ten highlight reel goal. Aaron Miller took the puck in the right circle and sent a pass in the slot to Parker Tumoie who deflected the puck between his legs and past Sioux City goaltender Cameron Gornet and suddenly it was just a 3-2 game. The celebration would be short lived however as CJ Dodero brought the puck down the left wing boards and blasted a shot from the left circle that beat Stezka's left pad to make it a 4-2 game. Sioux City took that lead into the locker room with the Herd outshooting the Musketeers 13-10 in the period.

The Stampede made things interesting once again early in the third period when Chaz Switzer scored 1:51 in. Switzer took a pass from Tristan Rostagno at the right point and blasted the puck into the upper left hand corner of the net to pull the Herd back within a goal at 4-3. That gave the Herd new life and Sioux Falls nearly tied the game on several good scoring opportunities, but remained a goal back as the period continued. Sioux City regained their two-goal edge on a somewhat controversial call at 12:14. It appeared Stezka had the puck frozen, but no whistle was blown and Matt Steeves was able to jam in the puck to give Sioux City a 5-3 lead. The Herd pulled Stezka with two minutes remaining for an extra attacker, but weren't able to get a goal and dropped their first game of the season.

The Stampede outshot the Musketeers 19-13 in the third period and 40-39 in the game, but went 0-for-3 on the power play while going 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

The Stampede return to action this Friday when they travel to face the Force at 7:05 PM. The Herd will then host Omaha on Saturday, October 10th at 7:05 PM at the PREMIER Center. Tickets are available through the PREMIER Center Box Office or any Ticketmaster outlet. The first 1,500 fans will receive a free magnet schedule, compliments of Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital.
