Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
Muskegon, Michigan. (October 3rd) - The Lumberjacks have their home opener at L.C. Walker Arena spoiled by the USNTDP U-17 as they lose 6-3.
The Jacks came out to a quick start as they fired a flurry of shots on Team USA goaltender Adam Scheel. But it was Team USA striking first on a goal from left wing Joey Cassetti as he went five-hole on goalie Joey Daccord.
Despite a barrage of shots and outstanding puck control in Team USA's zone, it was Team USA jumping out to big first period lead. Right wing Michael Pastujov capitalized off a turnover to open up Team USA's lead to 2-0. Just 19 seconds later, Team USA's Logan Cockerill planted a goal past Daccord, ending Daccord's night. Devin Cooley started off with a few saves and then Team USA struck one more time with a goal from center Brady Tkachuk to take a 4-0 lead into the second period. The Jacks did have one goal called off as official ruled the puck was hit into the goal off a hand.
The Jacks continued their shot advantage as Team USA was held without a shot for more than half of the period. The Lumberjacks mustered 22 shots to Team USA's two shots in the second period. And it paid off for the Jacks who chopped Team USA's lead in half with two goals. The Jacks got on the board as William Graber won the draw in Team USA's zone and Dante Palecco ripped a shot from the top of the circle past Scheel. The Jacks then used the momentum from Palecco's goal to notch a second goal as Mitch Eliot slapped a shot from near the blue line that cruised right past Scheel. Logan Drevitch and Robbie DeMontis picked up assists on Eliot's blast.
In the third period, the Jacks struck first to trim Team USA's lead to 4-3. Collin Adams was on the receiving end of a slick crossing pass in front of the net from Rem Pitlick as Matej Paulovic also picked up an assist. The Jacks' comeback looked to be in good favor as all momentum shifted to the Lumberjacks, but Team USA remained resilient despite losing drastically in the shots battle.
Team USA capitalized on every opportunity they had as they struck back just two minutes after Adams' goal. Left wing Grant Mismash scored with assists from Randy Hernandez and Quinn Hughes. Shortly after, right wing Max Dhooghe scored the final crushing blow to the Jacks with assists from Pastujov and Max Gildon. Each team faced a lot of time on the penalty kill as the Jacks had eight penalties and Team USA had six penalties.
On a positive note, the Jacks dominated with an impressive offensive performance as they had 57 shots to Team USA's 17 shots. But, the Jacks could not make the most of their opportunities by only scoring three goals with two of those goals coming on the power play.
The Lumberjacks play their next game on Saturday, October 10 at L.C. Walker Arena against the Madison Capitals. The Lumberjacks will look to bounce back from the loss in their home opener by capitalizing on their scoring chances. Puck drop is at 7:15.
