Stampeders Select Six in CFL Canadian Draft
May 2, 2010 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Calgary Stampeders News Release
The Calgary Stampeders selected six players in Sunday's 2010 CFL Canadian Draft. With their first selection the Stampeders picked kicker Rob Maver (first round, fifth overall) from the University of Guelph.
"We're very excited about having this opportunity to bring Rob on board," said Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. "Going into the draft, one of our priorities was a kicker and we believe we got the best kicker in the draft."
Maver was an Ontario University Athletics all-star as both a kicker and a punter in 2009. He was tops in the OUA with a 92.9 per cent field-goal percentage and also led the conference with a 41.3-yard punt average.
The Stamps took defensive back Taurean Allen from Wilfrd Laurier University with their second-round selection (13th overall).
"We were very happy that Taureen was still available when we selected in the second round," said Hufnagel. "He is a very versatile defensive back with excellent cover skills."
Allen played cornerback for the Golden Hawks and was a three-time OUA all-star. He recorded 16.5 tackles, two knockdowns and one interception during the 2009 season and was invited to play in the 2009 East-West Bowl.
