Stampeders Mourn Death of Bruce Covernton

It is with great sadness the Calgary Stampeders learn of the death of Bruce Covernton. He was 57.

"Quick-witted and big-hearted, Bruce was a larger-than-life personality," said Stampeders president Jay McNeil, who was one of Covernton's offensive line colleagues during his playing days. "He was a great teammate, a great friend and, more importantly, he had a giant heart for people in need. He will be missed by many. We offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends."

Covernton was one of the anchors of the Calgary offensive line in the 1990s, twice earning West Division all-star honours and being named a Canadian Football League all-star on one occasion. The Morris, Man., native played 72 regular-season games for the Red and White from 1992 to 1996 and was the team's Most Outstanding Rookie in 1992 and Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman.

Covernton won two Grey Cup rings (1992 and 1998) with Calgary.

Prior to joining the Stampeders, Covernton was a standout at Weber State University. He was the first overall pick in the 1992 CFL draft.

A frequent participant in community activities and causes during and after his playing career, Covernton remained in Calgary after hanging up his cleats. He was an active member of the Stampeder Alumni Association.
