Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Stampede got a real test Wednesday night at the Ice Box in Lincoln and the Stars showed why they have the best record in the league at 11-3-0, rolling past the Stampede 7-2. Collin Peters and Parker Tuomie tallied goals for the Herd (7-7-0) while Stefanos Lekkas made 18 saves and Ales Stezka stopped 8 of 9 shots in relief in the third period. Lincoln scored three times on the power play and four times in the second period alone en route to the victory over the Herd.
The game got off to a good start for the Herd who scored just 4:23 into the game when Collin Peters tallied his seventh goal of the season. Garrett Cecere sent a pass into the slot to Peters who wristed a shot through traffic and into the net to give the Herd a 1-0 lead. That would be the only highlight of the period for the Stampede who held the lead until the 11:55 mark when the Stars scored the first of two power play goals. Christian Evers scored the goal followed by another power play goal off the stick of Adam Brady who blasted a shot past the stick side of Lekkas at 13:47 and the Stars took a 2-1 lead into the locker room. Sioux Falls outshot the Stars 14-13 in the period.
Things didn't get any easier for the Stampede in the second as the Stars Biagio Lerario scored just 5:50 into the period on yet another power play goal. Four minutes later it was Brady again, this time even strength as the Herd's Lekkas wasn't able to clear a puck behind the net and Lerario sent a pass in front to Brady who quickly slapped it into the empty net for a 4-1 advantage. It appeared that's how the period would come to an end, but the Stars weren't done scoring just yet. Jack Badani snuck in past the Stampede defense with just 39 seconds remaining to make it a 5-1 game and then Brady completed the hat trick when he danced around two Stampede defenders and backhanded a shot into the back of the net with just 14 seconds remaining in the period to give the Stars a 6-1 edge after two periods. Lincoln outshot the Herd 11-7 in the period.
Any hopes of a Stampede comeback were squashed at 5:10 of the third period when Henry Bowlby skated into the Stampede zone and blasted a shot from the right circle over the shoulder of Ales Stezka to give the Stars a commanding 7-1 advantage. Parker Tuomie would get the Herd on the board again at 6:34 to cut the score to 7-2, but that was as a close as the Herd would get. Jack Suter recorded an assist on the Tuomie goal to extend his point scoring streak to six games.
Sioux Falls outshot the Stars 13-9 in the third and 34-33 in the game. Lincoln was an impressive 3-for-5 on the power play while the Herd were 1-for-7.
The Stampede will look to get back into the win column this Friday when they host the Omaha Lancers at 7:05 PM at the PREMIER Center. The first 1,500 fans receive a free Stampede cowbell, compliments of AARP of South Dakota. Doors open at 6 PM and tickets are available through the KELOLAND Box Office or any Ticketmaster outlet.
