Stampede Signs Big Man with Local Ties

February 13, 2003 - NBA G League (G League)
Idaho Stampede News Release

BOISE, ID (February 13, 2003) – The Idaho Stampede has signed forward/center Darius Beard, the younger brother of former Boise State University standout center Tanoka Beard, for the remainder of the 2003 CBA season, it was announced today by the team. The move raises Idaho's roster total to nine players.

Beard (6-foot-10, 260-pounds) played at Bonneville High School in Ogden, UT, before attending Utah Valley Junior College. He then attended Tuskegee University, a NAIA school in Tuskegee, AL, for two seasons, from 1997-99, where he averaged 16.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Beard had looked into following his brothers footsteps by playing at Boise State, but decided otherwise after the departure of then head coach Bobby Dye.

After college, the Utah native went overseas to play in Spain for the Torrelavega Lobos during the 1999-2000 season, where he averaged 14.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. In 2000-01, he returned to the United States and averaged 4.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game with the Dakota Wizards as they won the IBA Championship.

Beard joins the Stampede as the team looks for its first winning streak of the season when they face the Great Lakes Storm tonight in Birch Run, Michigan. Idaho then travels to Illinois for a Saturday match-up against the Rockford Lightning, before heading to Sioux Falls for two games against the Skyforce on Sunday and Tuesday. Sunday's game is an afternoon tilt, beginning at 2:05 p.m. (mountain standard time).
