Valentine Cookies and Science Labs
February 13, 2003 - NBA G League (G League) News Release
GREENVILLE, S.C. (February 13, 2003) - February may be the shortest month of the year, but the community calendars of National Basketball Development League teams are bulging at the seams as the season heads down the home stretch.
From delivering home-baked Valentine cookies to raising money for a new science laboratory at a local school, NBDL teams continue to ingrain themselves in the fabric of the communities where they live and work.
While North Charleston and Huntsville are the only teams actually playing a game on Valentines Day, the Asheville Altitude plans to take advantage of the off day to deliver homemade cookies to the students at Vance Elementary School in Asheville.
Earlier this month, the Mobile Revelers joined forces with Christ the King School to help raise funds for the school's new science lab through a ticket voucher program that raised over $1,200 in conjunction with a single Revelers game.
With the Read to Achieve initiative continually in the forefront, NBDL teams are scheduled to make over 30 more community appearances in February, in addition to the ones already mentioned. There are 10 Reading Timeouts scheduled between Feb. 13-28 alone.
"The main measure of success in the NBDL is our standing year after year in the communities in which we play," NBDL President Phil Evans said. "Our players, coaches and staff put a tremendous amount of passion and energy towards community relations initiatives."
NBDL teams are venturing outside the classroom as well, working as celebrity fund-raisers for numerous causes in their communities.
Greenville Groove players Billy Thomas and Greg Gray donated their time last week by going on the bachelor auction block to raise money for the Greenville chapter of the Make A Wish Foundation. North Charleston coach Doug Marty and Lowgators forward Sedric Webber took time out from a 10-game road trip to serve as celebrity waiters for a Charleston's Boys and Girls Club fund-raising dinner.
"Our goal is to provide unparalleled time and access to our players, coaches, and staff on a year-round basis and to improve the quality of life in our communities," Evans said.
