Idaho Stampede News Release

BOISE, ID (February 20, 2003) – The Idaho Stampede is set to host the Gary Steelheads in the Idaho Center for the first time this season, as the two teams will meet Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Gary currently leads the season series 2-0.

The Steelheads (19-22) come to town as the third place team in the American Conference, but sit only 14 quarter points out of second place and a playoff spot. Gary is led by newly acquired forward Junior Burrough, who leads the team in scoring at 23.0 points per game. The former University of Virginia standout was a second-round draft pick of the Boston Celtics in the 1995 NBA Draft. Joining Burrough is high-flying guard Bryant Notree, the 2003 CBA All-Star Slam Dunk Champion.

This weekend's games will also have a National Championship flavor, as members from both teams of the 2002 NCAA National Championship game will be on the floor in Gary's Dane Fife (Indiana) and Idaho's Byron Mouton (Maryland). Mouton scored four points and pulled down four rebounds in 27 minutes of game time, as his Terrapins outscored the Fife's Hoosiers 64-52 for the title in front of 53,406 fans at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Fife finished the game with 11 points and five rebounds in 36 minutes of action. Both players are rookies this season, and Mouton is currently considered to be a front-runner for CBA Rookie of the Year.

Friday's game is set to tip-off at 8:10 p.m. due to the Idaho Girls State Basketball Tournament. All fans in the Idaho Center for the high school games will be allowed to stay for the Stampede game for free, with general admission seats available to them. The halftime entertainment will be provided by the Studio C Academy of Dance in Eagle, and the Boogie Katz, a local break-dancing group will perform between quarters.

Sunday's contest has been moved up to a 2 p.m. start with the doors to the Idaho Center opening at 1 p.m. It is State Employee Day, with all state employees receiving a discount to the game, and the Oinkari Basque Dancers will provide the halftime entertainment. Sunday also marks Stampede guard Chris Garner's 28th birthday.
