Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-A three goal first period would provide all the scoring the Stampede would need as they topped the Lincoln Stars before a crowd of 6,408 at the PREMIER Center Friday night. Kieffer Bellows scored twice while Cooper Marody added two assists and Art Brey made 16 saves for the Herd who improved to 18-13-4 and finished their nine-game homestand with a 7-1-1 mark. The Stampede drew over 55,000 fans during the homestand and lead the USHL in attendance with an average of 6, 058 fans per-game.
A game after posting just 16 shots on goal for the entire game, the Herd posted 19 shots in the first period. The Herd wasted no time getting things going as they scored just 1:26 in when Kieffer Bellows tallied his 15th goal of the season when he wristed a shot from the right circle over the right shoulder of Lincoln netminder Can Hackett, just underneath the crossbar to give the Herd a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until 13:51 when Troy Loggins recorded his 12the goal of the year. Dakota Joshua wristed a shot from the slot that was stopped by Hackett, but the puck squirted through his pads into the crease where Loggins dove in and knocked in the loose puck to make it a 2-0 game. Less than five minutes later Bellows tallied his second of the night when Cooper Marody weaved his way through the Lincoln defense, cut in front of the net and had his shot stopped by the left pad of Hackett, but Bellows quickly knocked in the rebound and the Stampede led 3-0 after one period, outshooting the Stars 19-5.
After a scoreless second period and two full periods of no penalties, the Stars got the first and only power play of the night and converted at 2:26. Michael Gillespie took the puck in the right wing corner and made a nice behind the back pass into the slot for Ludvig Hoff who was all alone and one-timed it past Stampede goaltender Art Brey to make it a 3-1 game. The Stars continued to put some pressure on the Herd in the period, but the Stampede defense held strong and Brey made saves down the stretch to secure a 3-1 victory for the Stampede.
Sioux Falls outshot the Stars 30-17 on the night and had no power play opportunities while Lincoln finished the night 1-for-1. The Stampede remain just three points behind third place Tri-City in the Western Conference.
After nine straight games at home the Stampede hit the road to Kearney, Nebraska Saturday to face the Tri-City Storm at 7:05 PM. Fans can catch the game live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and online at kelo.com starting at 6:40 PM. The Herd return home to the PREMIER Center on February 6th and 7th.
