KEARNEY, NE - Nick Rivera provided the only scoring for the Omaha Lancers on Friday night as the Tri-City Storm scored four goals in the first period on route to a 5-1 victory in front of 2,981 fans inside the Viaero Event Center.
It was a big opening period for the Storm and is started courtesy of Cody Milan in front of the net. Mason Appleton set up Milan below the offensive zone circles and he let a shot go immediately and kept it on the ice that beat Kris Oldham low for a 1-0 lead at 5:17 of the first period. Appleton was credited with the only assist.
Just 53 seconds later, the Omaha native Chris Wilkie put Tri-City ahead by a pair of goals with an unassisted goal from the right wing circle. Wilkie took the puck and moved down the right side and let a hard wrist shot go that beat Oldham to give the Storm a 2-0 lead at the 6:10 mark of the first frame.
Omaha was awarded a power-play however Tri-City converted while short-handed for a three goal lead. As the Omaha defense pinched in on the left side of the ice, Cody Milan pushed the puck to the neutral zone and hit Mason Appleton with a breakaway pass. Appleton moved in alone and despite being pulled down, somehow moved the puck by Oldham and into the net for a 3-0 lead with 9:43 left in the opening period. Milan picked up his second point of the period with the lone assist. After the goal, Zach Driscoll replaced Kris Oldham in net for Omaha.
As time was running out in the first, Nick Master took the puck at the top of the left wing circle and let a high shot go that went over the left shoulder of Kris Oldham, off the crossbar, and straight down into the net for a 4-0 advantage with an assist from Garrett Gamez with just 1:06 left in the first period.
The Lancers came back in the second period and put together better shifts but the only goal in the second period came from Tri-City. Garrett Gamez forced a turnover in his offensive zone on the right side. At the same time, Matthew Freytag pinched in from the left point and took a pass from Gamez then fired the puck by Zach Driscoll for a 5-0 lead. The goal came at 11:05 of the second period with the only assist going to Gamez.
In the third period Michael Wilson picked up his first point of the season with an assist on a power-play goal for the Lancers. Wilson took the puck from Hank Crone and sent it out to Nick Rivera who tapped in his 7th goal of the year to get Omaha on the scoreboard, now trailing 5-1. That held up as the final as the Storm won their second game over the Lancers on the season.
