Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Joe Howe stopped 28 shots and four shootout chances, but the Sioux Falls Stampede defeated the Waterloo Black Hawks 2-1 Friday during the USHL Fall Classic in Sioux City.
Even before the shootout, Howe was called on to stop several one-on-one opportunities during his first complete game appearance of the preseason. At 3:20 of the opening period, he turned away Ryan Kesti's breakaway with no rebound. Near the midpoint of the second, Howe stopped Robbie Vrolyk after the Sioux Falls veteran stepped behind the Black Hawk defense. Howe forced the shootout by robbing Vrolyk again in the closing seconds of the game, after a Black Hawk had fallen down trying to slow a Sioux Falls rush at center ice.
In the opening period, a loose puck at the bottom of the circle near Howe's glove side created the opportunity for Sioux Falls' lone goal of regulation. Victor Anilane was first on the spot, and gave the Stampede the lead 10:46 into the game. The Black Hawks tied the score on the power play at 15:43 of the opening period. Craig Smith raced up the left wing boards, all the way to the edge of the crease, before flipping a shot into the opposite top corner of the net to even the game.
Jeff Rohrkemper scored the only goal of the shootout with Sioux Falls' second opportunity, beating Howe with a forehand chance to the stick side.
Sioux Falls netminder Clay Witt made 25 saves and stopped all five Black Hawk shootout chances.
The Black Hawks wrap up their series at the Fall Classic and their preseason Saturday with a 1 PM game against the Lincoln Stars.
