St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release

St. Joseph, MO-Andrew Edwards made a resounding return to the St. Joe (23-20) starting rotation with a 3-1 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries (14-29). Edwards, in his first start since June 1, did not allow a hit until the sixth inning in earning his first victory of the year.

St. Joe struck in the first for the sixth straight game as Scooter Jordan and Ben Thomas started the game with singles and Wil Quintana's groundout scored Jordan to make it 1-0.

The 'Snakes got another run in the second on a two-out single by Thomas that scored Jimmy Mojica and it was St. Joe 2, Sioux Falls 0. It would be 3-0 when Thomas would again single to score Mojica for an unearned run in the fourth inning.

That run came after controversy for the second straight night. Monday night, it was whether Jake Whitesides' home run was fair or foul. Tuesday night, it was whether time out was called at first base when Dennis Anderson doubled in a run. The umpires would rule time had been out when the pitch was thrown and took the run off the board. Anderson then struck out and Sioux Falls played the remainder of the game under protest.

Andrew Edwards (1-1) went into the sixth inning without allowing a hit and retired the first batter before three straight singles led to a run and ended his night with 5 1/3 strong innings. Three relievers combined for 3 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball to close out the win, with Jamie Tricoglou earning his third save.

Ben Thomas had three hits and two runs batted in for the offense, and Scooter Jordan had a pair of hits while Jimmy Mojica scored twice.

But St. Joe was mathematically eliminated from winning the first half with St. Paul's win over Pensacola, 7-1.

These same two teams will continue the series Wednesday night at 7:05pm with Evan Thomas (2-5) starting for St. Joe against Sioux Falls' Alex Perez (0-0). The gates open at 6pm as it is Bingo Night at the ballpark and seniors 55-and-older get a dollar off their tickets to the game. The broadcast can be heard, beginning at 6:45pm, at www.stjoeblacksnakes.com and at 88.9 FM at Phil Welch Stadium.
