Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls - The St. Joe Blacksnakes (1-1) picked up the franchise's first victory at the expense of the Sioux Falls Canaries (1-1) in a 6-2 game at the Birdcage on Saturday night.
The Blacksnakes got on the board in the top of the first inning, with RBIs from heavy hitters Wil Quintana and Cody Nowlin, putting St. Joe in front 2-0.
The Canaries got one back in the bottom of the first. Alexis Hernandez drove in Ralph Santana to make it a 2-1 game.
A home run for Quintana and a sacrifice fly RBI by Terrell Merriman brought the Blacksnakes to a 4-1 lead over the Canaries in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Canaries tallied a run when Sammy Juarez RBI groundout scored Justin Schuda. After four it was 4-2, but the Canaries would get no closer.
Canaries Starter Doug Johnson (0-1) saw his night come to an end after Nowlin tripled and Merriman singled him home for a 5-2 lead. Mike Rodriguez was brought on in relief and held the Blacksnakes at bay. Rodriguez allowed just one run on four hits while striking out three and walking one. While Rodriguez didn't allow the Blacksnakes to get any more than a 6-2 lead, the Canaries bats could not manage to score.
Jamie Tricoglou (1-0) picked up the win, while Doug Johnson suffered the loss. The Canaries wrap-up their series with the Blacksnakes on Sunday, when they will host the St. Joe Blacksnakes again at the Birdcage. Sunday is the Canaries 2006 Poster and Plant Giveaway. Sioux Printing will give out posters to the first 500 fans and Hiebert's Greenhouse will give out flowers to the fans after the game in honor of Mother's Day.
