St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-For the second straight night the Blacksnakes bats started fast, but this time it was enough for victory. After scoring three times in the first Friday night, the offense pushed across a pair in the first frame Saturday night and would not look back in a 6-2 win over Sioux Falls.
It was Jamie Tricoglou working five strong innings to earn the victory, and the middle third of the order that led the way to victory. Wil Quintana, Cody Nowlin, and Terrell Merriman-hitting fourth, fifth and sixth in the lineup-combined to go 8-for-13 with two triples and a home run, scoring four times and driving in five.
In the first, Jake Whitesides and Mark Burke reached and Quintana scored Whitesides with a single to left for the first run. Then Nowlin singled home Burke and St. Joe had a 2-0 lead.
After Sioux Falls plated one in the first, St. Joe would add to the lead and never give it up. They struck again in the third when Quintana hit his second home run in as many games-a solo shot-to make it 3-1. After Nowlin tripled, he scored on a Merriman sacrifice fly and the lead was 4-1.
Sioux Falls would score their second run in the fourth, but only get one hit over the last five innings. The 'Snakes would add singles in the fifth and seventh on run-scoring hits by Merriman and Ben Thomas for the final 6-2 margin.
Tricoglou (1-0) allowed just two runs on four hits over five strong innings for the win. The bullpen of Donovan Graves and Jesen Merle combined to allow just one hit over the final four scoreless frames. Sioux Falls starter Doug Johnson (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs over 4.1 innings.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series Sunday afternoon with a 2:05pm matinee. It is a great pitching matchup as RHP Mark Nussbeck (0-0) will make his St. Joe debut against LHP Tony Cogan (0-0) for Sioux Falls. Both have spent extensive time at the AAA and Cogan has major league experience with the Kansas City Royals in 2001. We will be on the air at 1:45pm with the Heartland Health Pre-Game Show at www.stjoeblacksnakes.com before the 2:05pm first pitch.
