St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release
Sioux City, IA-St. Joe did not lose in as dramatic a fashion as was the case Friday night, but it was by the same tight 4-3 score at Sioux City. The 'Snakes (5-10) have dropped four in a row, including the first two games of this four game series with the Explorers (7-8). Game three is Sunday evening at 5:05pm.
The Explorers struck early against starter Andrew Edwards (0-1) with a pair in the first inning. Ryan Ruiz doubled leading off and would score the first run on a wild pitch. Friday night's hero for Sioux City Jorge Moreno doubled in the second run of the inning for a 2-0 lead.
But St. Joe would get one back in the second. Wil Quintana doubled to left and would eventually score on Jefferson Infante's two-out RBI single and the lead was 2-1 for Sioux City.
However, as would be the case all night, the Explorers responded to St. Joe runs, and they would get another in the second as a leadoff walk would prove costly to St. Joe. Robert Mendoza knocked in Alex Llanos with a single to make it 3-1.
The 'Snakes would get a second run in the fourth with help from sloppy Sioux City defense. Mark Burke reached on second baseman Julius Thames' first error of the year to start the inning. Cody Nowlin followed with a double down the right field line and when Thames' relay to second got away, Burke scored and Nowlin advanced to third with nobody out. It was 3-2 for the Explorers with the tying run 90 feet away and nobody out. But St. Joe couldn't come through.
Sioux City again responded with a fifth inning run on a sacrifice fly. Wil Quintana-who had already thrown out one runner at the plate-nearly threw Julius Thames at home but Thames' slide dislodged the ball from catcher Jefferson Infante to make it 4-2.
The Blacksnakes would get to within one with an unearned run in the eighth inning on a wild pitch but would strand the potential tying run in both the eighth and ninth innings to fall for the fourth straight night.
The series continues Sunday evening with a 5:05pm start. Evan Thomas (1-1) goes for St. Joe, against Sioux City's Thomas Lipari (1-1). Tune in to the broadcast beginning at 4:45pm with the Heartland Health Pre-Game Show from Lewis & Clark Park.
