St. George RoadRunners News Release
ST. GEORGE - A 33-minute rain delay in the middle of the fifth inning could not damper Alexis Gomez's super night. The former Detroit Tigers blasted two home runs and knocked home five in St. George's 8-5 series-opening victory over the Chico Outlaws on Monday.
The RoadRunners improve to 8-3 on the season and increase their lead in the GBL's Southern Division to 2.5 games over Tucson and Long Beach.
Gomez tied the game in the third inning with the first of his homers, a three-run shot to right-center. His solo shot in the fifth gave the RoadRunners a lead they would never relinquish. The right fielder now leads the team with five long balls on the year.
Angel Sanchez went back-to-back with Gomez in the third with a solo home run off Outlaw starter Kevin Altman (0-2).
Mac Nelson threw six innings allowing five runs on eight hits, but picked up his third consecutive win (3-0). Eude Brito sturck out four in two relief inning and Bartolome Fortunato (1) notched a save tossing a scoreless ninth.
Chico held a 4-1 lead after their half of the third. Five straight singles including two-run hits by Rich Janeway and Bryan Silverman highlighted the frame.
St. George rapped 13 hits led by Ruddy Yan with three while Gomez and Jose Rodriguez added two apiece. Chico's two leadoff men, Dale Swinford and Dan Luyben, each had two hits while the team produced nine in total.
Game two of the series is Tuesday night from Bruce Hurst Field. The RoadRunners will start lefty Luis Gonzalez (1-1) while the Outlaws are expected to counter with former Yuma righty Mike Martin (1-0). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
