Squirrels Erupt in 7th to Blow Past Baysox, 11-6

BOWIE, MD - The Richmond Flying Squirrels (13-13) used a seven-run sixth inning to blow past the Bowie Baysox and claim an 11-6 win at Prince George's Stadium on Wednesday night. The seventh inning marked the most prolific offensive inning of the season for the Squirrels and netted them their third straight win and first road series victory of the season.

The Baysox got started quickly against left-hander Jack Snodgrass. Xavier Avery led off the first inning with a single. He promptly swiped second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch from Snodgrass. Kyle Hudson brought him in for a 1-0 lead with an infield-single.

Bowie struck again in the second, plating a pair of runs against Snodgrass. Three consecutive walks issued by Snodgrass fueled the inning, which included a bases-loaded walk to Avery. Hudson also knocked in his second run of the night on a fielder's choice ground out for a 3-0 lead.

On a limited pitch count, and struggling with his command, Snodgrass worked just two innings. He was spared the decision, allowing three earned runs on four hits. He walked three and struck out none in his shortest outing of the season.

Bowie right-hander Devin Jones was in control through the first three innings, but the Squirrels busted through against him in the fourth to tie the ballgame, 3-3. Jones started his own trouble when he plunked Mark Minicozzi in the left shoulder with one out. Ricky Oropesa followed with a double into the right-field corner. Javier Herrera then singled into left field to plate Minicozzi. Andrew Susac rifled a double into left field that brought both Oropesa and Herrera in to tie the ballgame.

Right-hander Taylor Rogers piggybacked on the outing for Snodgrass, entering in relief in the third inning. He worked two scoreless innings before Bowie snatched their lead back against him in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ty Kelly doubled home Hudson, who had singled to start the inning. A batter later, Henry Urrutia contributed a single to plate Kelly for a 5-3 lead.

Rogers (1-1) ultimately worked 3 1/3 innings of relief for the win. He permitted two runs on five hits, walked four and struck out one. The victory was the first at the Double-A level for the righty.

The win for Rogers was earned in the top of the sixth inning - the most prolific offensive inning of the season for the Squirrels. Oropesa opened the inning with his second double of the ballgame and Herrera followed with a 2000 double to score him. Jones was lifted in favor of left-hander Chris Petrini, and things unraveled for the Baysox. Petrini walked Jarrett Parker and conceded an RBI single to Brett Krill. Ehire Adrianza reached on a costly error charged to second baseman Buck Britton, as the Squirrels took their first lead of the ballgame, 6-5. With the bases loaded, Petrini walked Joe Panik to force across another run. Minicozzi then punctuated the rally and put the game out of reach with a bases-clearing three-run double into the left field corner.

Petrini (1-3) was saddled with the loss for the Baysox, allowing five runs - four earned - over 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Susac capped the Squirrels scoring for the night with his fourth home run of the season in the top of the ninth inning. The solo-shot to left field came off righty Matt Bischoff and tied Susac for the team-lead in home runs with Herrera. Herrera finished the night with three hits and a pair of RBIs. He also stole a base and scored twice. Susac finished with three RBIs and Oropesa boasted two doubles and two runs scored. Panik had his 10-game hit-streak halted, but walked twice and picked up an RBI.

Right-hander Omar Javier allowed just a lone run over 2 2/3 innings of solid relief. The run scored for Bowie in the bottom of the ninth inning. However, closer Daryl Maday then came on in the ninth inning and closed out the win for the Squirrels.

The finale of the abbreviated three-game series is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. on Thursday at Prince George's Stadium. LHP Ryan Bradley (0-2, 7.02) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Mike Wright (2-0, 5.40) for the Baysox.
