North Adams SteepleCats News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - Guided by a five-strikeout, seven-inning performance from southpaw ace Scott Squier (Hawaii), North Adams made two early runs stand the rest of the way as the SteepleCats edged Vermont, 2-1, to earn a NECBL West Division doubleheader split with a win in the nightcap on Monday night at Montpelier Recreation Field.

With the tying run at third base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Squier struck out the last batter of the game to give the SteepleCats (17-17) a huge bounce-back win after the Mountaineers (19-14) blanked the visitors in the earlier game Monday.

The southpaw from Hawaii finished with five strikeouts and surrendered six hits but was otherwise brilliant, letting up one unearned run for his third victory of the year against Vermont and his second complete game victory. His counterpart Camerson Sorgie was also excellent, taking a tough loss after yielding two runs - one earned - on four hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

For the visitors, four individuals finished with a hit apiece while Kevin Krause led the way with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate for the home side, which out-slugged North Adams, 6-4, in game two.

North Adams hopped ahead after junior Joe Landi (URI) manufactured a run by drawing a walk, moving to second on a sacrifice, taking third on a bloop single and scoring on a sacrifice fly from freshman Brad Anderson (Pepperdine), giving the visitors an early 1-0 lead.

Two innings later, Landi again sparked the offense with a leadoff double before sophomore Vinny Zarrillo (Rutgers) pounded a hard-hit grounder that ricocheted off the shortstop and into center field, allowing Landi to score easily and double the 'Cats lead to 2-0 heading to the fourth.

After two scoreless frames, Vermont finally got aboard in the bottom of the sixth. A one-out single for Mike Vigliarolo gave the home side its fifth hit of the game before taking second on a passed ball. Then, Scott Donley rolled a grounder that took a tough hop at second, allowing Vigliarolo to score on the error before freshman Jacob Huckabay (UT-Pan American) gunned down Donley at second for the second out. Squier promptly ended the inning on a strikeout to prevent further damage.

Vermont again threatened in the bottom of the seventh after Krause reached on an infield single, took second on a sacrifice and moved up to third on a deep fly ball that freshman Kyle Richardson (Notre Dame) ran down in deep center, but Squier blew three strikes by the final batter to end it.

The SteepleCats continue a busy nine-game, seven-day week tomorrow, July 23, when they hit the road for Saratoga to battle the Brigade for the fourth time this summer. First pitch from East Side Recreation Field is set for 6:30 p.m.
