North Adams SteepleCats News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - After both sides put up scoreless frames through the first four innings, host Vermont exploded with two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth, and with Trey Oest dealing on the mound that was enough to bank North Adams, 5-0, in game one of an NECBL West doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Montpelier Recreation Field.
Shut out for the sixth time this season, the SteepleCats (16-17) saw a four-game winning streak come to an end, while the Mountaineers (19-13) ended a three-game losing streak of their own.
Oest, a rising sophomore from Viriginia, dazzled in his second start against North Adam this summer; the right-hander blanked the âCats through seven innings, allowing seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
For the visitors, sophomore Casey Kennedy (Glendale C.C.) put up zeroes through our innings before getting into trouble in the fifth; the lanky right-hander allowed two runs on six hits with two walks before sophomore Toby Schwartz (Lafayette) allowed three runs on three hits in the sixth.
Both sides had chances through the first four innings of play, but both Oest and Kennedy managed to work around and out of jams to keep the game scoreless heading into the fifth.
That was when the Mountaineers finally got to Kennedy, starting with a leadoff double from Thomas Roulis on a hot shot into the gap in right center. After a popup, Scott Donley came through with a base hit through the box, and the throw at the plate was not in time to give Vermont the first run of the game. One batter later, Mike Vigliarolo smacked a double into left center to make it 2-0 Vermont before Schwartz retired the final two batters.
An inning later, the home side tacked on three more runs on another three-hit inning to push the game out of reach. Mark Podlas lef off the frame with a single before Bret Dennis walked, and both would score on a base knock from Chandler Brock. Two batters later, Vigliorolo again came through with a run-scoring single, rounding out the game's offensive totals with the hosts in front by five.
