Keene Swamp Bats News Release
In battle of first place teams, it was the Eastern Division's Newport Gulls that got the better of Keene, defeating the Swamp Bats 6-3.
The NECBL pitcher of the week Brian Hunter didn't fare so well in his start on Monday night against the Gulls.
Hunter, out of Hartford University, lasted just 2.2 innings, giving up two runs, none earned, on three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.
Sam Triece and John Birkbeck came on in relief of Hunter, and struggled to limit the damage. A big four run fifth inning that came off of five straight Gull hits, made it a 6-2 Newport lead.
Keene did score the first run though, on an Eric Gutierrez RBI double that scored Matt Ford.
After Newport scored two runs on two errors in the third, Louisville's Zach Lucas launched his NECBL leading fifth homerun to tie the game at 2-2.
Newport's four runs made it 6-2 until Keene scratched across a run in the eighth off of a Dan Nichols RBI double to make it 6-3, but that is all that Keene could score, as they fell to the Gulls on Monday night.
The defeat snapped Keene's winning streak at nine games and drops the Swamp Bat's record to 20-14. Keene will next be on the road on Tuesday night to take on the Westerners at Danbury.
