Springfield splits series

June 29, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Springfield Sliders News Release

The Springfield Sliders earned a split of their two game series with the Quincy Gems at QU Stadium in Quincy, IL tonight with a 6-3 victory. Springfield started off hot, taking a 3-0 lead on back to back home runs from DH Matt Tellor and LF Mike Fitzgerald, both hitting their seventh of the year. 3B Sean Gerber then hit a solo home run to lead off the second inning, increasing the Sliders' lead to 4-0. Quincy temporarily got the lead down to three with a run in the second, but the Sliders got the run right back in the third with C Matt Stevens picking up an RBI. Quincy would again cut the lead to three with a run in the bottom of the third, but again the Sliders would have an answer. This time it was a home run by 1B Reagan Fowler, his first of the season. Fowler's home run made it 6-2, and it would stay that way until Quincy scored the game's final run in the eighth inning. Jeremy Holcombe pitched five innings to pick up the win for his second straight start, and T R Dunne pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his sixth save. With Quincy's loss, Dubois County clinches the first half title for the Prospect League's West Division, and an automatic playoff berth at the end of the season. The Sliders continue their five game road trip tomorrow when they start a two game series against the Hannibal Cavemen to wrap up the first half. First pitch is set for 6:35, and the game will be broadcast on the Sliders' Ustream channel.
