Dubois County Bombers News Release
HUNTINGBURG, Ind. - Dalton Rouleau only played the last inning and a half, but he made his limited time count, tying the game in the bottom of the ninth and driving in the winning run an inning later in a 7-6 Dubois County Bombers win over the Danville Dans Friday night at League Stadium in Huntingburg, Ind.
Rouleau pinch-hit for Bombers right fielder Scott Windler in the bottom of the ninth with Cody Daily on first. He lashed a one-out double to left, knocking in Daily and knotting the score at 5.
An inning later, with teammate Jeff Zahn having just re-tied the score at 6, Rouleau batted with the bases loaded and no one out and promptly lined the first pitch he saw from Danville reliever Trey McNickle up the middle to finish an back-and-forth thriller.
Nick Smart (4-1) was the surprise winner for Dubois County, pitching the eighth, ninth and tenth innings while allowing three earned runs, including the go-ahead run in the top of the tenth.
He had come on in relief of starter Ty Simpson, who battled early control issues and lasted seven innings, allowing three runs - two earned - on six hits and five walks. Simpson struck out six.
Ryan Keller (1-2) blew the tenth-inning save opportunity and took the loss for Danville, allowing two earned runs and retiring no one. McNickle relieved him and retired one Bomber - Daily - before surrendering the hit to Rouleau.
Dan starter Houston Hibberd pitched eight innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.
Matt Frahm blew the initial save opportunity for the Dans, allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth. He relieved Hibberd and retired Jeff Zahn for the first out.
Then Andrew Daniel, playing shortstop for Danville, botched a Daily groundball. Daily scored on Rouleau's double.
Dubois County had a chance to win it, but Rouleau was hung out to dry when Curry whiffed on a suicide squeeze.
Pat Gannon relieved him and held the score at 5-5.
The Dans had taken an early lead in the second inning with an unearned run. The Dans loaded the bases with no one out, and Bombers catcher Kolin Conner attempted to pick off the runner at first after Simpson struck out Dans catcher Logan Fiasco.
His throw was wide, and Max Homick, who had led off the inning with a double, scored.
Danville pushed its lead to 3-0 in the third. Tyler Fullerton and Casey Fletcher reached on a hit-by-pitch and walk, respectively, and Daniel knocked in Fullerton with a double.
Fletcher scored four batters later on a Drew Hacker single.
The Bombers got one back in the bottom of the third when Windler was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw from Hibberd. Austin Nyman then drove in Windler with one-out double.
Conner made it 3-2 with a solo home run in the fifth.
Smart relieved Simpson to pitch the top of the eighth but ran into trouble, allowing two runs on four straight hits after he retired the first Danville batter of the inning.
Dubois County immediately matched those runs on Tyler Brake's two-out, two-run single. Brake was 2-4, notching his first two hits and first two runs-batted-in for the Bombers.
Smart worked a scoreless ninth to hold the score at 5-4.
Dubois County (20-8) plays the Rex in Terre Haute, Ind., Saturday at 7:05 p.m. while Danville (8-20) heads to Quincy, Ill., to play the Gems at 7:35 p.m.
