Dubois County Bombers News Release
HUNTINGBURG, Ind. - Nick Green induced a fly out to centerfield for the final out of a 3-2 Dubois County Bombers win over the Terre Haute Rex Tuesday night at League Stadium, clinching the Western Division title for the Bombers.
Dubois County won the division in the first half while the Rex had the best record in the second half.
Green earned his eighth save of the summer, recording the final two outs. He allowed both of his inherited runners to score as a 3-0 Bombers lead shrank to 3-2, but he ultimately preserved the win.
"It was a little nerve-wracking," said Bombers starter Alex Britt. "I figured one of the two guys I walked would score, but Green's a fantastic pitcher. He's our best closer. I wasn't worried about him."
Britt (6-1) tried his hardest to make sure no other pitchers would be needed. He logged a season-high 143 pitches through eight and one-third innings before a pair of one-out walks ended his evening.
"It was a good game," Britt said. "Our defense, the way [Bombers catcher] Kolin [Conner] called the game, you couldn't ask for anything more."
For the most part, Britt scattered the six hits and three walks he surrendered. Striking out Rex batters eight times helped, too.
"I felt bad giving up both of his runs," Green said. "But we got the job done."
It didn't take long for Dubois County to give Britt some support at the expense of Rex starter Tommy Strunc.
Strunc (5-3) allowed three runs on two hits and five walks in two and one-third innings.
Both runs he allowed in the second were earned.
Conner led off the inning with a walk, and designated hitter Chris Tavares doubled two batters later. After a Bo Ausmus walk, Austin Nyman walked to force in Conner. Landon Curry's sacrifice fly drove home Tavares before Strunc worked out of an inning that saw Dubois County take a 2-0 lead.
Strunc left after the Bombers tacked on an unearned run in the third. Cody Daily led off with a bunt single and advanced to third on the same play: Strunc fired his throw well over the head of Rex first baseman Kyle Zimmerman, and Zimmerman then threw the ball over the head of second baseman Edmund Cheathem to put Daily at third.
Jeff Zahn knocked in Daily with a sacrifice fly, and the Bombers led 3-0 in the third.
"We got to them early and got in [Strunc's] head a little bit," Green said.
Alex Sachs and Nick Blount combined to hold Dubois County scoreless over the next five and two-thirds innings, but Britt made the Bombers' lead stand up, only finding trouble in the ninth when he clearly labored.
"That's the most I've thrown all summer," Britt said. "I'd never thrown more than 115 [pitches] before this summer started."
The Bombers head to Beckley, W. Va., to play the Eastern Division Champion West Virginia Miners for Game 1 of the Prospect League Championship Series Thursday, August 9. This game will be broadcast online at http://www.teamline.cc/sportpage?teamcode2946&eventcode5.
The two teams then face off for Game 2 Saturday night at League Stadium. Game 3, if necessary, would be Sunday night. Tickets for the game(s) at League Stadium are on sale. Regular season prices apply.
