Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

Lowell, MA- Luke Montz had a two-run double in the first inning and a solo home run in third inning to lead the Vermont Expos to a 5-2 victory over the Lowell Spinners in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at LeLecheur Park.

Montz, who entered the game in a 4-for-32 slump, lined a two-out pitch up the gap in leftcenter to score Duron Legrande and Marvin Lowrance to give the Expos a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After an unearned run for the Spinners in the bottom of the first, Vermont got the run right back in the second inning when Brad Ditter singled, stole second and scored on a RBI single from Maurice Cobb for a 3-1 Expos lead.

Montz then hit a two-out solo home run to left field in the third inning to increase the Vermont advantage to 4-1. It was Montz's second home run of the season and first since June 21st, while his three RBI in the game tied him with Edgardo Baez for the team lead with 13.

Lowell got an RBI single from Carlos De La Cruz, who was 3-for-5, in the fourth inning to cut the Expos lead to two, but again Vermont answered back in the fifth inning on Marvin Lowrance's first home run of the season for a 5-2 lead.

Expos starter Steven Cook pitched in-and-out of trouble in his four innings of work, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. David Trahan (1-1) relieved Cook to start the fifth inning and tossed three hitless innings with one walk and two strikeouts to pick up the victory.

Ben Cox and Gus Hlebovy each allowed a hit in an inning of relief, while Hlebovy had two strikeouts and picked up his league-leading seventh save of the year. Vermont relievers have now tossed 13 straight scoreless innings, giving up just four hits with two walks and 16 strikeouts.

Vermont (13-14), which has won three of the first four games in this five-game series, will wrap up the series with the Spinners (11-16) on Friday night and try for the fifth time this season to reach the .500 mark. The Expos begin a six-game homestand at Centennial Field on Saturday night with the Batavia Muckdogs in town for three games followed by the Brooklyn Cyclones for three games.
