Splendid Stuff from Skeeters in Win, 5-2

CAMDEN, New Jersey - The Skeeters shelled out 15 hits and used five scoreless innings from the bullpen after a solid spot-start from Ryan McKeller to pick up the 5-2 win in game one Friday night at Campbell's Field.

Coming up next...The Sugar Land Skeeters (12-10) face off against the Camden Riversharks (10-11) in game two of the three-game set at Campbell's Field. Jason Lane (3-2, 2.25 ERA) toes the rubber against Mike McGuire (5-6, 4.01 ERA) with first pitch scheduled for 4:35 p.m. CDT. The Skeeters return home to Constellation Field on August 10 for a six-game home stand with division rivals, the Lancaster Barnstormers. Sugar Land started the scoring after a scoreless first at Campbell's Field Friday night. Keith Weiser (5-6) made his fifth start and second in a row against the Skeeters but fell behind early in the second inning. Weiser hit Steve Moss in the first at-bat of the inning and Bubba Bell singled him to second to follow. After a fielder's choice by Manny Mejia, shortstop Jake Eigsti threw wild to try and turn the double play allowing Moss to trot home uncontested to take the 1-0 lead. One batter later, Iggy Suarez capped the inning with an RBI single into left to push the lead up to 2-0.

After starter Ryan McKeller retired the side three-up three-down in the bottom of the second, the Skeeters gave him more comfort with another run in the top of the third. Ofilio Castro reached on a single up the middle in the leadoff spot and Jason Lane walked to put two aboard. Josh Pressley almost hit into his second double play of the game, but again, Eigsti at short dropped the relay throw to first. With runners on the corners, Moss smacked an RBI single up the middle to push the lead to 3-0.

McKeller gave up his first run in the bottom of the same inning, though. Paddy Matera led off with a double, and in the motion of going to third, was awarded home on the throwing error from Dominic Ramos on the relay throw from right, 3-1. One inning later, Camden scored their second when Pedro Feliz led the inning off with a triple and was brought in on a groundout by Raul Padron, 3-2 after four innings.

The Skeeters bouced back n the fifth with one run to boost the lead back to two. With the bases loaded and only one out in the inning, Matt Hagen brought home Pressley on a groundout to third to increase the lead, 4-2. In the sixth, Pressley drove in his 55th run of the year with a two-out RBI single into right plating Ramos from third after his double put him on base to take a 5-2 lead.

Pedro Liriano (6-3) pitched three scoreless innings facing the minimum number of batters and Roberto Giron threw just five pitches retiring the side in order in the eighth. Gary Majewski made an appearance in the ninth to pick up his 16th save of the season facing just three batters with an inning-ending double play to close out the 5-2 win in game one Friday night.
