Spivey Walks It Off, Jackals Top Quebec in 11

New Jersey Jackals News Release
The Jackals returned to Yogi Berra Stadium on Thursday to face the Quebec Capitales in the opener of a four game slate after a wild series in Rockland that saw them score 32 runs over three games.
New Jersey immediately placed Capitales starter Brett Lee in some hot water, loading the bases in the bottom of the first inning without recording a hit. 3B Taylor Oldham walked, 1B Danny Canela was hit by a pitch (that forced him to leave the game) and CF David Harris walked. That led 2B Seth Spivey to poke an infield single to first base, scoring Oldham and staking the Jackals to a 1-0 lead. RF Jordan Hinshaw kept the scoring barrage rolling with a two RBI single, which pushed the lead to 3-0 New Jersey after one.
Quebec would get on the board thanks to back-to-back doubles to lead off the 4th inning off the bats of 1B Zach Wilson and DH Maxx Tissenbaum, making the score 3-1 Jackals. After a wild pitch advanced Tissenbaum to 3rd, RF Kalian Sams lifted a sacrifice-fly to center, narrowing the Jackal lead to one.
The Capitales weren't done yet. 2B Nick Gotta tapped a pitch back to Jackals starter Mat Latos, who successfully got one out at second, but the relay to first from SS Carlos Triunfel was airmailed into the visitors dugout, allowing C Adam Ehrlich to score, tying the game at 3.
Latos would depart after five innings, allowing three runs (two earned), on five hits while striking out four. He would not factor in the decision. Neither would Quebec's starter Brett Lee, who worked seven innings, striking out five and allowing the three Jackal runs on four hits.
In the eighth, tempers would flare and give the Jackals a chance at the go ahead run. After a leadoff double by Oldham against Capitales reliever Mike Hepple, home plate umpire M.J. Beaver called a balk, moving Oldham to third and bringing an irate Patrick Scalabrini, Quebec's manager, out of the dugout. After a lengthy argument and the ejection of Scalabrini, CF David Harris would walk but Spivey would unceremoniously end the threat by grounding into a double play to end the inning.
Jackals bench boss Brooks Carey would also get his moneys worth in the top of the ninth, arguing a call on a close play at first base after Quebec 2B Nick Gotta slid in safely. Gotta would advance to third, but would remain there after Jackals closer Vin Mazzaro caught LF James McOwen looking to end the frame.
After the Jackals failed to walk it off in the ninth, a game of theirs headed to extras for the fifth time this year. Mazzaro worked a one-two-three top of the 10th and the Jackals appeared to be one big play away from a walk-off win. After a lead-off double by catcher Kevin Torres, left fielder Connor Hofmann laid down what appeared to be a good enough bunt to advance Torres to third, but he went back to second which resulted in a rare 2-6 double play.
In the bottom of the 11th, with the international tie breaker placing Oldham at third, Spivey would send the fans home happy with a laser of a line drive down the first base line, giving the Jackals a 4-3 win.
The Jackals move to 41-43 on the year and even the series with Quebec at seven games apiece. New Jackals relief pitcher Matt Vogel (1-0) picks up the win after working a scoreless 11th inning. Will Dennis (2-2) suffers the loss, allowing one unearned run. Tomorrow's game is scheduled for 7:05. Eduar Lopez (1-2) is scheduled to pitch for the Jackals, while Quebec is slated to send ace Karl Gelinas (7-7) to the hill.
