Windsor Spitfires News Release

WINDSOR, ON.

The Spitfires should probably haven't been in OT with how many chances they generated and a lot of non-powerplay call. But they staved off the Soo and won in overtime 5-4 and a big 2 points.

In the first period, the Spitfires looked sluggish after playing just a night ago. A few miscues and the puck ended up in the back of their net 3 times in the first 6 minutes of play. A Maggio goal broke up the Soo scoring but the Spitfires took their timeout to settle things down after going down 3-1 early. The Spitfires picked up the pace and started to get better as the period went on. Just over halfway through the frame, Cristoforo threw the puck towards the net and it was deflected in by Morneau for his 6th of the year. Greentree picked up the 2nd assist. With just over a minute left in the period, the Spitfires were on the powerplay. Maillet on the puck to Renwick who skated in over the blueline towards the side boards, he fell but was able to slide the puck to a wide open Abraham in front of the net who made no mistake. It was his first goal in his second game back from injury and 9th on the season. We were tied 3-3 heading into the break. The Spitfires trailed in shots 14-12.

In the second period, it was Maillet scoring just 18 seconds into the frame to give the Spitfires a 4-3 lead. That was the lone goal of the period. The Spitfires had a 24-20 shot advantage after 40 minutes.

In the third period, the game started to get out of hand as numerous penalties for both teams went uncalled. The Soo would score late in the game as a tripping penalty on them went uncalled and they took the turnover and score to tie it at 4. We were headed to OT.

In the OT frame, the Spitfires had numerous chances to bury it. Maggio whistle one wide and then was all alone on a breakaway but was stopped by the goalie. Just under two minutes in, a great play on the Spits blueline by Dionicio to keep the puck out of the zone, landed on Peer's stick and he skated up the ice with Dionicio and fed him a cross ice pass and he backhanded it into the yawning cage for the Spitfires win 5-4. He hit the Griddy for all to see, his classic move and the fans loved it.

The Spitfires won their 6th straight.

The Spitfires are back in action on Saturday the 11th in Saginaw as the take on the Spirit. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm.
