Windsor Spitfires News Release
The Mississauga Steelheads came into town for a matchup with the Spitfires Thursday evening. The Steelheads took the first of the season series by a score of 4-3. The Spitfires were looking to tie the series in the 2nd and final game versus Mississauga.
In the first frame, the Spitfires struck first just eight and a half minutes into the game. Boka found Zito in front and Zito patiently waited and made the extra pass to Angle who buried it in the open side. It was Angle's 19th of the season. Just under ten minutes later, the Spitfires struck again. Mcdonald swept a nifty behind the back pass to Playfair who sniped one making it 2-0. That was all of the action for the period; shots were tied at eight after one period.
In the 2nd period, the Steelheads struck twice, the first just 2 minutes into the period. The second was just over 10 minutes into the period. The score was tied 2-2 after two periods of play. The Steelheads led in shots 22-15 after 40 minutes.
In the third period, the Steelheads got two goals within the first 10 minutes of the period putting them up 4-2. But the Spitfires rallied back. Douglas scored the first with 6:28 left in the 3rd period. Only 4 minutes later, Afanasyev tied the game on the powerplay. Overtime solved nothing and the game went to a shootout.
In the shootout, Afanasyev scored on the first attempt. This Steelheads lost the puck on their attempt. D'Amico was the second shooter for the Spits, and he buried it five-hole, making it 2-0. The Steelheads needed to score to stay alive, but Medina was up to the task making a great shootout save and winning the game for the Spitfires.
The Spitfires' next game is December 20th when they travel to Saginaw for a matchup with the Spirit. Puck drop at 7:05 pm.
