
Spitfires Fall in Flint 7-4

The Spitfires were playing spoiler as the final 5 games of the season come to a close. The Firebirds sit 8th in the conference and 1 point behind the Attack for 7th a win would hold the Firebirds in 8th. On Saturday, the Spitfires would fall short and lose 7-4.
In the first period, the Spitfires got down early 2-0 as the Firebirds were able to strike twice in the first 2:48. The Spitfires were resilient throughout the frame and battled back. Morneau scored his 13th on the season from Zhugin off a back door feed to cut the lead in half. Just over five minutes later, the Spitfires struck on the powerplay as Abraham sniped his 28th from Greentree and Woodall. Flint would respond as Dann would score to restore the Flint lead to 3-2. The shots were 12-10 in favour of Flint after 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Firebirds would extend their lead to 4-2 off a redirection seven minutes in. Late in the frame, the Firebirds would score to make it 5-2.
In the third period, the Spitfires would start on the powerplay and convert on it to narrow the lead. The Spitfires trailed 5-3 with 19 minutes to play. Just four minutes later, the Spitfires caused a turnover in the Flint zone and Greenwell poked check a Firebird off the puck and Zhugin went to the backhand to score his 19th goal of the season and make it a 5-4 game. The former Spitfire in Peer would turn on the jets and score for the Firebirds to make it a 6-4 game. Peer would score on the empty net and take this game 7-4.
The Spitfires are back in action tomorrow Sunday the 17th as the London Knights come to town. Puck drop is at 4:05pm.
