The Kitchener Rangers made their way down highway 401 to faceoff against the Spitfires Sunday afternoon on Sportsnet. The Spitfires were 1-2-0 against the Rangers this season coming into tonight's game.
In the first period, it was all Spitfires; they came out fast and hungry. It only took the Spitfires four minutes to get on the scoreboard. Angle got his 29th on a sweet feed from Henault to make it 1-0. Rafkin got the secondary assist. The Rangers led in shots 13-11 despite being down 1-0.
In the second period, the Rangers tied it up just under halfway into the period. However, the tie score didn't last long when Afanasyev buries his team-leading 31st goal just seventeen seconds later. Henault and Angle assisted on the goal. The lead lasted just four minutes when Kitchener tied it up at two. Shots were 23-20 in favour of the Rangers for forty minutes.
In the third frame, it was back and forth action that had the fans at the edge of their seats. It looked like this game was headed to overtime, but penalty trouble caught the Spitfires shorthanded with under two minutes to go. On the five on three powerplay with time dwindling, Kitchener scored with 42 seconds left to take a 3-2 lead. They held on to the 3-2 win after the Spits came close but couldn't cash in. shots ended up being 33-29 in favour of the Rangers
The Spitfires' next game is home at the WFCU Centre on Thursday, March 12th, when the Saginaw Spirit come to town. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
