
Spitfires Double up Firebirds 6-3

WINDSOR, ON. - The Spitfires were looking to put the right foot forward after suffering a 6-3 loss less than 24 hours ago to the Generals. The Flint Firebirds were in town for a Sunday afternoon matchup on the Spitfires Annual Teddy Bear Toss Night. The Spitfires were able to turn the tide in a positive direction as they handed the Firebirds a 6-3 loss.
In the first period, it was the Oliver Peer show. The Overager netted a natural hat-trick in the first 17 minutes. Peer would make it rain Teddy Bears just over six minutes into the contest as he potted home a rebound of Smith's shot. Less than two minutes later, Maillet would find Peer all alone in the slot of his 2nd of the night and 17th on the season. Peer capped off the hat-trick on the power play as he had a see-ing eye shot from the point find the twine. The Spitfires were up 3-0 after 20 minutes and had a narrow 14-12 shot lead.
In the second period, the Firebirds domainted the play however Michelone stood up to the task. They were able to strike 6:31 into the period to cut into the lead. They fired 23 shots in the period, while the Spitfires had 8. The Spitfires were able to restore the 3 goal lead late in the frame as Abraham would fimd the back of the net. Zhugin went around the net twice before sliding the puck to Abraham for his 6th of the year. The Spitfires had a 4-1 lead after two periods but trailed in shots 35-22.
In the third period, things got a little hairy for the Spitfires as the Firebirds mounted on the pressure. Early in the frame, the Spitfires would get some much needed insurance as Greentree made it 5-1 with his 18th on the year. Peer and Cristoforo had assists on the goal. The Firebirds would respond with two goals in five minutes to make it a 5-3 game. The Spitfires had to kill off a late powerplay and the PK was perfect going 2/2. In the final minute, Peer would spring Greentree for a breakaway on an empty net and he made no mistake. It was Peer's 5th point on the night. The Spitfires would double up the Firebirds by a score of 6-3.
The Spitfires are back in action on Thursday when the London Knights come to town. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
