
Spitfires Defeat Visiting Spirit 7-4

WINDSOR, ON - The Spitfires had a little mental lapse but held on for a big win on Thursday evening. The debut of Shane Wright went well as the Spitfires defeated the visiting Spirit 7-4. He had several key chances and ended the game with 1 goal and 1 assist.
In the first period, the Spitfires were great off the rush and created many scoring chances. Those chances turned into goals halfway through the first period. Maggio, Dionicio, and Harrison broke in on a 3 on 2, Maggio passed it across the ice to Dionicio who passed to Harrison on the back door for a tap in and a Spitfire lead. Five minutes later, the Spitfires were on a powerplay, Dionicio drop passed it and the Spitfires blueline to Wright who fed it over to Maggio, he streaked up the middle of the ice, the defender fell and Maggio went in to score on a breakaway for his 29th of the season. Costanzo made several key saves in the frame as the Spirit led 10-7 in shots.
In the second period, just over a minute in the Spitfires offence would click for another goal. Greentree fed Maillet in front of the net who whacked in his 12th of the season. Saginaw would strike back less than 4 minutes later. Almost 9 minutes later, Harrison scored his 2nd of the night with a beautiful through the legs move for his 19th of the season. Morneau and Cristoforo had the assists on the goal. Four minutes later, the rookie Spellacy and Castle had a 2 on 1 opportunity, Spellacy had the puck and decided to rip one past Lennox for his 7th of the year. In the final minute of the period, the Spirit would score for their 2nd of the night. The Spitfires led 5-2 on the scoreboard and 20-18 in shots.
In the third period, the Spitfires had a little sleepiness in their game. Saginaw would score 2 goals in the first 5 minutes and 20 seconds of the period to make it a 5-4 game. Spits fans were on the edge of their seat awaiting the games next goal. The Spitfires had a late powerplay but could not score. In the final minute, the Spitfires were content with dumping it in and holding on. Peer ringed the puck around the boards all the way to the other side to Renwick who walked into a slapshot and he sniped his 11th of the season to make it a 6-4 game. 20 seconds later the Spirit had the net empty and the newest addition, Shane Wright would take a pass from Harrison and go in on a breakaway to score and seal the deal. The Spitfires took a vital 2 points away from their Western Division foes with a 7-4 victory.
The Spitfires are back in action on Saturday in Saginaw for the 2nd part of this home and home stand. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
